My block came from my love for Nine Patch blocks. They are my favorite and I'm always trying to think of creative ways to use a nine patch in a block or quilt.
Quiltmaker chose to put it in the foundation section of the blocks. However, if you're not a fan of paper piecing, you can make it without that technique. I used the Sashing Star Set of rulers from Marti Michelle to make my spiky star. The block is block #1352 on page #37 . The template for the foundation piecing is on page 70.
I also don't like to cut 7/8" sizes of anything so I rounded it up to an even number to make my half square triangles. I like the extra wiggle room to square mine up.
As usual, I waited until the last minute to make my project for the blog tour. I wanted to show you what you could do with just one block. That won't take much time... and it didn't. It makes a great wall hanging or table topper!
Here are a few other ideas for layouts for the block.
No sashing....
With Sashing and cornerstones...
A Christmas version...
Or a girly version...
Play with the colors and have fun with the possibilities!
And now for the best part... the giveaway. Leave me a comment and tell me if you've ever made any blocks from any of the issues of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks. One lucky winner will be receiving all 100 patterns in their very own issue of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 14. Will it be you?
You can see other designers and links to their blocks today on Quiltmaker's blog Quilty Pleasures. Hop on over and check it out.
Congratulations on having your block included in Quiltmaker's 100 and being on the cover this year! Awesome! I love civil war fabrics so your block caught my eye right away ;-D What a difference fabric colors make. Thanks for showing different layouts. ReplyDeleteI have not made any yet - and that is just ridiculous, isn't it? I have almost every issue, and a block a day might be a good project for 2017...
ReplyDeleteActually, I never have made a block from any of the "100 Blocks" books. Just never got around to it, even though so many are appealing--like this one. Your color examples are fun, but I like the way the original block de-emphasizes the star element best.
ReplyDeleteI keep thinking I will make a block, but I have so many other projects I'm working on, I have not actually made a block. (celiaambrose@hotmail.com)
ReplyDeleteI often use the "100 Blocks" magazines when I need to find a block for a sampler quilt. The 100 blocks magazines are like an encyclopedia that just keeps growing.

I've used a couple blocks but sometimes it is the ideas that they inspire in my own work! mumbird3(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have...
ReplyDeleteI know I used at least one block to make a baby quilt. I have made others as well, although the number of blocks has gotten so big that I don't recall exactly which blocks I've tried. I love these magazines because they are so full of creativity and inspiration!
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, no I have not, even though I have almost all of the issues. I have plenty of pages post-it-note marked. Does that count? Great redo of our faithful 9-patch.
ReplyDeleteYes,I have incorporated the blocks into quilts thru the years. And I see some I can use from this year's entries, good job. Kathy in colo repzjratplainsdotnet
ReplyDeleteI don't actually know... I've certainly dreamed up a lot of quilts with the blocks, but if I have made one, I think it was only for block swaps and not a whole quilt. Glad to know there is a way to do your block w/o foundations.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have made some of the blocks from 100 blocks magazine. They fit perfectly on my little 12" quilt hanger. Love your block. I have the TriRecs templates and enjoy having an opportunity to use them. Your fabric choice is great too!
ReplyDeleteI made a sampler Christmas quilt using block patterns from the first issue of 100Blocks!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful block and paper pieced at that! My favorite kind of block to make. Your choice of fabrics is wonderful. I have made blocks from the first 10 100 Block magazine. I have to admit that my early issues are quite worn and I have written in them when I made the blocks. It is so much fun to sew up a new block and share it with others. I just hope that the 100 Block magazine will go on and on.
ReplyDeleteI haven't made any of the blocks from 100 blocks.
