One of the new things I'm doing on my blog for 2015 is Quilters Tips, Tricks, and Tuts Tuesday.  Each Tuesday I'll post a different Tip, Trick or Tutorial... until I run out of ideas....  Sometimes it will be something from me, sometimes from someone else's blog, or maybe just a chart or handy reference table.

Feel free to grab the button and put it on your blog... or go to my Pinterest board.  I'll post each tip, trick, or tut on a board for easy reference.

The first one is this:  QUICK ROTARY CUTTING

When I need to cut a lot of pieces (squares and rectangles) I cut them in a grid instead of one square at a time or one strip at a time.  The example I'm using I will need 96 - 2 1/2" squares.   If I can get 16 - 2 1/2" squares from a width of fabric strip, I will need 6 strips 2 1/2" wide x WOF (96 / 16 = 6)

Here's how I do it:

1.  Lay the fabric on your cutting mat, lining up the folded edge on one of the lines of the cutting mat.

2.  Using your 24" (or longer) ruler, line the ruler up with a line on the mat that is perpendicular to the folded edge of the fabric and square the edge of your fabric by cutting off the excess with the rotary cutter.

3.  Continue to move your ruler across the fabric cutting a strip the width you need.  Cut as many strips as you will need for your desired project, without moving any of the fabric strips cut.  It's hard to see my strips that are cut but really, they are.

4.  When you have the number of strips needed, move your ruler the opposite direction to cross cut the squares (or rectangles).  I always start at the selvage edge and cut it off first.

5.  Continue to cross cut the strips, using the grid lines on the mat as your guide to cut as many as you need.  If the ends are larger than 1 1/2" I save them and put in my stash busting drawers (more on that later).  Anything less than 1 1/2", I throw away.  These excess pieces on the fold of this one are wide enough to keep.  I can get another 2 1/2" square out of the fold piece.

Isn't the grid neat looking?

Now you can just pick them up and stack them.  They're ready to piece in your quilt.

Look at that!   Easy, peasy!!!  I just cut 96 - 2 1/2" squares in under 4 minutes! (Well actually I didn't cut them, William, my great assistant life saver cut them for me.)
