Here is my block in red, white, and blue that was submitted for the magazine. Those of you who know me knew I'd have to do it in that color combo.
However, here's another color option that's just as fun. It's bright, and fun, and happy! I called it my Top Secret Quilt. It's always so hard to keep the block a secret before it comes out in the magazine. I used some fabrics from Blank Quilting's line called A Sewing Kit.
It looks like my label it crooked but it really isn't.... I don't think.... I think it's just the photographer. She needs to learn to take better pictures (wink, wink)!!
Quiltmaker shows my block as a foundation pieced block but when I made the blocks, I didn't use the foundation pieced method. I sewed my strips together in 2 different color sets and then used the "stitch and flip" method to make the flying geese. Either will work, it just whatever your preference is.
By using the stitch and flip method, you will have extra that you cut off. I saved those pieces and made half square triangles out of them. I intended to show you my project using them but life got in the way. I have a son who is a senior this year and plays on the golf team. Needless to say, things are a bit hectic with his schedule and up and coming graduation right now. You'll have to check back the first part of June (after graduation) to see what I did with them.
So.... How will you make your block? What color option will you use? Do you like to use fun, novelty prints in your quits? Which method will you use to piece it together?
The editors of Quiltmaker are giving away a free issue of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 9 to one lucky winner. Be sure to leave me a comment and tell me if you like to make quilts with fun, novelty type prints of if you're a more traditional kind of quilter! Make sure you're not a "no-reply blogger". I can't give you the magazine if I can't contact you. After you leave me your sweet comment, hop on over to Quiltmaker's Quilty Pleasures Blog and see the others participating in the blog tour.
Be sure and come back for the Perfect Picnic Blog Hop coming May 23rd thru June 9th.
It's sure to involve a picnic quilt, a picnic basket, a picnic menu, fun picnic activities, and a picnic date with someone special.
I like novelty prints sometimes but mostly I use traditional or Batiks. Love your block.
ReplyDeleteI´m also big fan of Bonnie Hunter and her scrappy style. Your block could be done in scrappy way, I love turquoise, yellow, brown and light mix.
ReplyDeleteI would use some of my red, white & blue stash to make your block.
ReplyDeleteI don't typically use too many novelty prints, but the funny thing is that my sweetheart loves them--I can almost guarantee that if we go anywhere near a quilt shop, he'll immediately point out the fabric with some kind of "theme". Not what someone would expect if they met him or know him well, but it's true.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely a traditional gal but i do love adding a little punch of contemporary every so often. Melissa adyldrop@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI use all prints that come my way (not always in the same quilt, though).
ReplyDeleteA scrappy variation of your block would look good.
You block is very cute. I love scrappy quilts and also Bonnie Hunter. I have a lot of novelty prints so I think I would like to try your block with some of them.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the chance to win
thim3@hotmail.com
I enjoy making quilts with novelty prints (got a big bin full waiting their turn), but I also like more traditional quilts too. Love your block - thanks for sharing & thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI have done both, however my label would be more traditional. Your block looks snappy in both fabrics. Thanks for sharing and the opportunity!
ReplyDeleteI am a scrap quilter who is learning to use color to my advantage instead of just throwing everything in the pot and sewing it together-I have been following Bonnie Hunter for almost 2 years now and my quilts are looking more cohesive. Took me a bit of figure out how this block was made, but got it now! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI like you block and love the quilt. I'm both a novelty print quilter and a traditional quilter. I use whatever the occasion calls for.
ReplyDeleteI really like your block! Thanks for sharing! I usually use traditional fabrics but do enjoy a novelty print now and then.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the chance to win, I love the block. It's simple, but has such an impact, especially with the novelty prints. I used to be more of a traditionalist, but with all the fun fabrics out there and 10 grands, I've found myself leaning towards the fun, scrappy quilts.

I love the block in black, pink, and blue! Very striking!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your block being published. I love this block, looks like a real challenge. I think that I am a very traditional type person when it comes to piecing a block, but quilting a blanket is a very different thing.....I can get very creative. Tonja W - sewingqueen16@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteYes, I love to make quilts with novelty prints. I make a lot of scrappy quilts and adding novelty prints makes the quilt more interesting -- you never know what little surprise you might find hidden in all those pieces! I love your block, and find it interesting how the pinwheels jump out in the one made with black but not so much with the other colorway. Blocks that can take on different looks are always winners in my book.
ReplyDeleteI really like both! Traditional, novelty, modern - everything really.
ReplyDeleteI love traditional and scrappy most
ReplyDeleteLove it all
ReplyDeleteI like rotary cut piecing best, but I also paper piece
ReplyDeleteI like it all - sort of a recycling of designs, colors and fabrics. I have read and heard the saying 'everything old is new again' and I think that is really true about quilting.
ReplyDeleteBut I would never want to return to the cardboard templates and scissors era. Give me the modern tools please and thank you.
I am mostly of a traditional quilter, although I have ventured into a little bit of modern. I just spent the past 3 weeks taming my scraps. So now I have organized scraps already for a project. Your's looks perfect for my scraps.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a chance to win
I'm mostly a traditional quilter. I also follow Bonnie Hunter and need to do some taming of my scraps.
ReplyDeleteLove the block. I too am a fan of Bonnie Hunter but I am always open to try new things. Thanks for the giveaway!!
ReplyDeleteI am definitely a traditional quilter, but I totally appreciate the bright prints. I love to make the bright prints for the kids at David's House - a local hospital where very sick kids can stay with their families while receiveing treatment. Everyone goes home with a quilt! Thanks so much
ReplyDeleteI like both novelty and traditional quilt fabrics. Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a traditional quilter though my last two quilts have been more in the novelty area ... fun to "stretch your legs" once and awhile!
ReplyDeleteI have some fun retro/beach fabric which would be great in this quilt block. I would use the strip piecing since I am not skilled at paper piecing. Cindy
ReplyDeleteI love the novelty prints, particularly themed for children.
ReplyDeleteI am drawn to the novelty prints, so always love to find blocks that work well with them.
ReplyDeleteGreat block design. I love all kinds of strippy quilts so this would be a good one to try.
ReplyDeleteI love Bonnie's quilts, too. She is so inspiring. I tend to use traditional fabrics. If I'm working on a baby quilt, I may use children themed novelty fabrics.
ReplyDeleteI am a traditional quilter, but I do like to use novelty prints as well. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI am definitely a traditional quilter, but I prefer to use solids. Thanks!
ReplyDeletedbelliott at outlook dot com
I'd say I am probably more traditional, but I do like to use novelty prints as well. Just bought some bacon fabric for a pillowcase for my son. Shhh! don't tell.
ReplyDeleteI sometimes choose novelty for holiday items or boys quilts, but generally choose the more blended options.
ReplyDeletecongrats, I love your block. I really love to make quilts with fun, happy, bright fabrics. And of course it must be just right for that some one special. Thanks for the give a way. quilting(dash)lady(at)comcast(dot)net
ReplyDeleteI used novelty fabrics in my Hexy Pelt charm quilt (each hexy had to be different), and I hope to make an "I-spy" quilt someday!
ReplyDeleteWell, I wouldn't say I'm a traditional type of quilter, but I do like to use traditional type of fabrics. I"m not into the novelty fabrics unless there's a specific purpose in mind (like for a friend, who say, loves wine.) In any case, congrats on getting your block and quilt into the publication. Thank you for hosting the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteDoris, your block is really cool. I love the fabric you used for it too!
ReplyDeleteI like to use the more subdued traditional prints, but do love to look at the novelty or scrappy ones. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteNice block, thanks for the chance to win
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your publishment ! Have you heard about your quilt show ribbons...Ms Early Mayors award ? Fun/novelty-traditional ? I'm kind of like the song...I'm a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll.
ReplyDeleteNice block, congrats
ReplyDeleteWow I am more of a traditional quilter. I love novelty prints but find it hard to figure out how to really use them in a pieced quilt
ReplyDeleteI like to do both. For me I make traditional and primitive style but I love making fun quilts for others and charity.
ReplyDeleteDebbie
I really like your block, I want to try it! While I like some novelty fabrics, I am no designer so have trouble using them properly.

ReplyDeleteI like more traditional blocks. Not a huge fan of novelty fabrics.
ReplyDeleteTraditional piecing is my favorite technique! I love novelty prints in bright, happy colors, and I love using fabrics from mu stash anytime I can!
ReplyDeleteI really like your quilt. The bright colors draw me in to admire. I do not have any preference in fabric. Any cotton will make a beautiful quilt. It might take a lot of thinking but they always are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI use traditional fabrics in bright colors.

Thank you for offering the giveaway. Nice block!
ReplyDeleteI go through phases of wanting to use fun novelties or more traditional fabrics & piecing.
I prefer rotary cut patterns done in blues/lavenders and showcase novelty prints in the attic window design. rozz01@cox.net
ReplyDeleteI've always loved the flying geese block and this is a great variation on it. I, too love Bonnie Hunter and follow her. I tend to use more traditional fabrics in my piecing. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your published quilt block. I love novelty prints, using them for small childrens quilt donations.
ReplyDeleteI would pull some blue, green and purple from my stash and use stitch and flip method (I use scraps for other projects) thx for chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI'm a very traditional type of quilter. I love solids, tone-on-tone prints, and marble blenders. I save novelties for large spaces like block centers and borders. The most novelty I have used is firefighter fabric, of course, since my hubby is a firefighter and we have three little boys.
ReplyDeletereillyr2(at)hotmail(dot)com
Since we have 6 great grandchildren, I love using novelty fabrics in the quilting I do for them, and colorful, more traditional fabrics for the rest of the family. You should be very proud of the fact that you have been published once again.

ReplyDeleteThe scrappy look adds so much interest! and I love to find more ways to use my novelty fabrics :-)
ReplyDeleteThe answer to your question is "yes"! ;-> I love traditional fabrics, but novelty fabrics have a definite place in my stash. I think you just have to know when to use them.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun block! Congrats on being published - again! I love novelty fabrics and lots of color. Thanks for the chance to win. Debby E :)
ReplyDeletesamtaylorcjsmimi at yahoo dot com
Novelties are fun - but sometimes a challenge as they can take over... or become outdated to the recipient quickly. I often use them for pillowcases though.

ReplyDeleteI'm a scrapper. Bonnie Hunter is a quilter goddess. I hope you learn to love scrap quilting as an option too. I would love to use batiks for scrapping but I don't have enough of them yet. Thanks for the design. It is very workable.

ReplyDeleteI like both novelty and traditional. I'm also a fan and follower of Bonnie Hunter. She is a great inspiration.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on being published - again! Bonnie Hunter is a triip isn't she? Being a foodie, I always try to incoporate a little food novelty print in my quilts. ReplyDeleteI would make this block your way. Love getting those bonus HSTs! And I use any fabric I'm lucky enough to own :)

ReplyDeleteI like to use novelty prints when making quilts for kids. Love your block! Congratulations on getting your block in the magazine!!! Totally awesome!
ReplyDeleteI'm a traditional quilter and mostly stick to soft pastels. However... I have been known to get out of the box and make something a bit wild for the grandkids' quilts.
ReplyDeleteI like bright colors, I think that it works well with your block! Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteI like modern loud colors. Traditional is so ordinary...it bores me!
ReplyDeleteI love the brighter, more modern fabrics, but somehow I gravitate towards the more traditional.
ReplyDeleteLove your block. I'm a fan of red, white and black and think your block using those colors would look great. I like using novelty fabrics as well as solids, and prints. Congratulations on being chosen for Vol. 9. What an honor.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on being featured! Nice block. I have been a traditional style quilter but have stepped outside of my box and done a few modern patterns using some pretty wild fabrics in the last year.

ReplyDeleteI love using novelty prints in quilts. Thank you for sharing and for the chance to win a copy of the magazine. Congratulations on having a great block in this issue.
ReplyDeleteI am really a traditional quilter; but have to admit that I really like your bright colors in the quilt you made using your block. Thanks for the giveaway.

ReplyDeleteFabulous block! I tend to lean toward more traditional quilting but I do have "moods" that strike & do something quite out of my element! But that's the fun of it all isn't it?!
ReplyDeleteThanks for a chance at the give-away.

ReplyDeleteI'm typically traditional, but I will use novelty prints on occasion. Love your block!
ReplyDeleteI am mostly traditional, but sometimes a novelty print grabs me, and I can't resist. :) Thanks for the giveaway! sarah@forrussia.org
ReplyDeleteI'm more traditional and batik oriented when it comes to fabrics. I'll see novelty prints I like but can't picture them in a quilt.
ReplyDeleteIt's so much fun to find the blocks that everyone makes. The best part is knowing that I can come back to a blog and play some more later.
ReplyDeleteI love novelty prints. I have a 6 yr old son who keeps me young at heart and mind, who loves going to fabric store and checking out all the novelty prints :) Congrats on your block!!
ReplyDeleteI love Top Secret. I'd also like to try it with batiks.
ReplyDeleteFunny that you mentioned a Bonnie Hunter class. I started following her blog after the last 100 blocks issue, and when I saw your block, I thought of her. Nicely done!
I am also a Bonnie Hunter fan, so my block will be scrappy. Maybe I'll use up some of my green or blue batiks. patwade@cox.net
ReplyDeleteI am a scrappy quilter. I like your secret block quilt. I enjoy bright and bold colors.
ReplyDeleteI like both traditional and novelty. It kind of depends on what I'm working on. Isn't Bonnie Hunter great? I'm trying to tame my scraps and start her "leader/ender" method. I'd love to see your block in shades of creams, greens and gold/rusts.
ReplyDeleteI am eclectic in my fabric choices.
ReplyDeleteI like both traditional and novelty fabrics. I've also taken a class with Bonnie H. She is amazing! Thanks for the chance to win a copy of Vol.9.

ReplyDeleteI'm really a traditional kind of quilter, but I have a 5 (almost 6) year old, so I do have my own little stash of novelty prints!
ReplyDeleteI tend to stay with more traditional fabric prints but more modern ones are great form bags and pouches.
ReplyDeleteI have a tendency to use a lot of green fabrics. I'd have to take look at your method before I made up my mind. I'm a very lazy quilter who was taught by a dressmaker. I inherited some pretty particulars about ironing and straight of grain.
ReplyDeleteGenerally prefer tones, blends with occasional splashy prints thrown in. thks
ReplyDeleteI have some novelty prints I am about to make up. I really don't know what to do with them yet, but the only other one I just did as bordered charms with alternating pinwheels. It did look lovely.

ReplyDeleteI guess I use traditional fabrics. I like bright fabrics but in traditional fabrics.

ReplyDeleteYour block is awesome! I am a newbie and am just learning different techniques. I would love to get some novelty fabric! I would use some turquoise and red !
ReplyDeleteAwesome looking block! The other fabric collection you used, "A Sewing Kit" is just gorgeous. I need to find some that fabric possibly. I think I'd like to see what your block might look like using Christmas fabrics, or maybe purple, lime green, and another color, possibly white or black. I'd use the stitch and flip method you used myself. I'll be watching to see what you've done with the extras cut off using that method when you post it.
ReplyDeleteWonderful block and it looks like it wouldn't be too hard to make. I don't usually use novelty prints in quilts except for baby quilts. But I am liking brights a lot more lately and your quilt is so much fun.
ReplyDeleteGreat block. I am a traditional type of quilter
