Have you seen the collection of Black Tie Boogie Fabrics? They are awesome and I'm really not a huge "chicken" fan. I am "chicken" at times though. Like when I have to go outside after dark. I'm not afraid of the dark, just things that go bump in the dark. And back in the day I was always a big chicken. I rarely ever did anything to break the rules as I was too afraid of what would happen if I got caught. Still am to some extent. (Teee Heee)
So back to the hen house. While contemplating what project I might make that would include hens, chicks, or roosters, I came across a piece of fabric at a quilt shop in Missouri that had roosters on in and guess what? They were red, white, and blue. And you know how I feel about red, white, and blue. I had to have it and it was going into something for the Black Tie Boogie Blog Hop. So without further a do
I made 4 of these place mats. They look great on my table. And you know what else? I actually like them, even if they are chickens or rather roosters. But they are patriotic roosters!
They were so quick and easy to make. Here's how you do it.
You will need 1/3 yard of focus fabric (chickens)
1/3 yard background fabric (chicken wire)
1/2 yard border fabric
5/8 yard binding fabric
1 yard of backing fabric
Cutting: Focus Fabric - cut 4 rectangles 10 1/2" x 6 1/2"
Background Fabric - cut 4 squares 10 1/2"
Border Fabric - cut 6 strips 2 1/2" x WOF (width of fabric)
Sub cut into 8 strips 2 1/2" x 10 1/2"
8 strips 2 1/2" x 10 1/2"
Binding Fabric - cut 8 strips 2 1/'2" x WOF
Construction: Begin by sewing the focus fabric rectangle to the focus fabric square right sides together. Press to the focus fabric.
Add a 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" border strip to each side of the above unit sewing right sides together. Press toward the border strip.
Add a 2 1/2" x 20 1/2" border strip to the top and bottom of the above unit.
That's it! You just made a place mat. Now take it to your favorite quilting queen and she will do her magic to make your place mat "crow"!
This quilting queen started by quilting a rooster on the chicken wire block in red.
Thought it needed to stand out more so I stitched over it again.
It still needed something so I enlarged the rooter pattern just a smidge and stitched it in blue thread. And then stitched it again! Now that's better. But, no chicken place mat would be complete without "feathers" so I quilted a meandering feather in the focus fabric block. And to keep them all penned up together, I quilted chicken wire in the border.
Many thanks to Madame Sam and our awesome cheerleader Miss Vickie and to our sponsors Red Rooster Fabrics and Florine Johnson Pattern Designs.
Now boot scoot boogie on over to these other sites to see what they are crowing about for the Black Tie Boogie Blog Hop.
